Because she and Mrs. Potter had spent so long lost in the corn maze, Rosemary had to say goodbye and be on her way before seeing the Potter familyâs burial plot. Mrs. Potter was happy to extend an invitation for Rosemary to return the following week, which Rosemary gladly accepted.
With the top still down on her trusty convertible, Rosemary enjoyed the fresh fall air on the drive to Paperwick University. The leaves were brilliant against a blue sky, and Rosemary slowed down as she drove through town, admiring tree-lined streets and beautiful old homes. She smiled as she passed the old courthouse, Potterâs Café, First Church, and the Bed and Bakery. She was tempted to stop the car and spend some time on the green, where ducks were gliding on the pond and several couples were chatting while walking around the fitness trail that wove its way through the trees.
But a glance at the clock told Rosemary that she only had an hour until she was to meet Jack and Seth for lunch, and she wanted to spend some time at the university library before then. So, she made the turn at the Village Market, where piles of pumpkins and colorful gourds were on offer outside, and drove toward the university. A few minutes later, she was pulling into a visitorâs parking spot near the library.
The library, like many of the buildings on campus, looked very old and historic from the outside. But when Rosemary pushed open a huge wood and glass door, she found a well-appointed, modern facility inside. The place was full of light thanks to huge windows, and rows of bookshelves were surrounded by comfortable sitting areas, computer kiosks, and study carrels. Small glassed-in meeting rooms and classrooms were scattered here and there, and it enlivened the whole atmosphere to be able to see students leaning over tables sharing ideas, classes being taught, and people huddled up with their noses in books.
Jack had told Rosemary to go to the front desk and ask for Jane Snow, who would be expecting her.
âHello,â Rosemary said to a pretty, older woman whose silver hair was pulled back into a ponytail. âIâm Rosemary Grey. Iâm looking for Ms. Snow.â
âAh! Hello, Dr. Grey. I am Mrs. Snow, but if you donât let the kids hear you, you may call me Jane.â She gave a little wink, and Rosemary immediately knew that she and Jane would get along just fine.
âNow,â Jane continued, âI believe you are here to spend some time with the genealogy collection?â
âAnd any local history you have would be great, too,â said Rosemary, nodding.
âLetâs get you settled in, then,â said Jane, motioning for Rosemary to follow her.
They entered a room at the back of the library which had the word âGenealogyâ written in gold lettering on the glass door.
âYouâll find most of what we have on the local families over here in this section,â said Jane, pointing to a couple of shelves along the wall. âAnd as you can imagine,
